Rare WWII ship headed to Scenic City
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – A rare military ship that was used during World War II plans to dock in Chattanooga on Sept. 11.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/1onY8uK ) reports the 50-foot wide, 328-foot long USS LST-325 is making its way up the Tennessee River toward the Scenic City after a similar stop in Alabama.
The newspaper reports it is the last surviving ship of its kind. The LSTs carried tanks, military vehicles, artillery and supplies to troops in battles during World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War
Mickey McCamish of the Southeast Tennessee Veterans Coalition says the ship’s landing date is no accident. He says it was scheduled intentionally “just as a reminder of the freedoms that we have.”
It will be open for tours Sept. 12-17.
