House Democratic leader questions Haslam on pre-K
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The top Democrat in the Tennessee House is questioning Republican Gov. Bill Haslam’s decision to limit his administration’s application for federal pre-kindergarten to only the two largest counties in the state.
House Majority Leader Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley tells The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1t5Psil) that it’s unfair that the counties that are home to Nashville and Memphis stand to gain about $70 million in pre-K money, while other parts of the state would receive none.
Fitzhugh says past litigation has created a requirement for all school systems to be funded equally. He says that even if the two counties were to receive the money from federal sources, the state would have to make up the difference to the remaining 93 counties.
