Tennessee plaintiffs ‘thrilled’ Supreme Court to hear case
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee is one of four states whose gay marriage ban will be part of a U.S. Supreme Court review later this year.
Among the plaintiffs are Valeria Tanco and Sophy Jesty, who were married in New York in 2011 before moving to Knoxville.
Reached by phone on Friday, their attorney, Regina Lambert, said she had just texted the news to her clients, and they are “thrilled.”
The state attorney general’s office had asked the Supreme Court not to hear the case. That would have left Tennessee’s ban on gay marriage standing.
Attorney General Herbert Slatery released a statement saying, “We respect the court’s decision to grant review.” He also promised to “continue to aggressively represent the state’s interest.”
