Officials rescue 16 dogs, 2 birds after owners hospitalized

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Sixteen dogs and two birds went nearly a week without food or water before they were rescued by Hawkins County officials.

The Kingsport Times-News reports ( one dog at the residence was found deceased, but the 16 that were rescued were all in good health as of Tuesday, six days after their rescue. That includes four puppies and a pregnant female that gave birth at the shelter.

Hawkins Chief Deputy Tony Allen said the owners were critically injured in a wreck on March 25, but the sheriff’s office did not learn about the animals until March 31, after receiving a complaint of animal neglect.

Hawkins County Humane Society workers rescued the animals the next day. Manager Sandy Behnke said the group will seek forfeiture of most of the animals.
