Ex-legislator sentenced for falsifying election documents
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Former state legislator and Shelby County commissioner Henri Brooks was sentenced to two years of probation and 80 hours of community service for falsifying her address on a petition to run for juvenile court clerk.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1IQAemv) Brooks previously entered an Alford plea on the felony charge. This special plea allows someone to plead guilty while still claiming innocence.
At the Thursday sentencing, Judge Paula Skahan also ordered a mental health assessment for Brooks. Skahan made reference to an assault charge that was dismissed as part of Brooks’ plea deal.
“I’ve got to question someone who is running for political office and gets into a parking lot battle with somebody over a parking space,” Skahan said. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Brooks plans to appeal.
