Memphis call center to lay off 590 workers by early July
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A Memphis call center has announced it will lay off nearly 600 workers by early July.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1Pr7R0y ) Conduit Global told its employees Wednesday that about 590 of them will be laid off around July 2.
Spokesman Kevin Gaugush says the company has about 700 employees at its Memphis location. Gaugush says about 70 workers will remain after the layoff.
In January 2014, Tennesse Governor Bill Haslam and local officials led a rally applauding the company’s decision to open a call center in Memphis. The company began serving customers last June.
Gaugush says workers may consider available openings at the company’s other call centers in San Antonio, Texas and McLeansville, N.C.
The layoffs could diminish the string of monthly improvements in the unemployment rate for metropolitan Memphis.
