NYC jail health provider fails at better rating
NEW YORK (AP) – Overall performance of the private health care provider for New York City’s jails failed to improve last year amid heightened scrutiny over inmate deaths that put the company’s contract under review.
City health department ratings obtained by The Associated Press show the Brentwood, Tennessee-based Corizon Health Inc. received an overall rating of “fair” in 2014 for the second straight year. It had previously been downgraded from “good.”
A spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement the company’s three-year, $126 million contract is still under review. It expires Dec. 31.
Lawmakers convened an oversight hearing on inmate health care after the AP reported last year on at least 15 inmate deaths since 2009 where quality and timeliness of care was a factor.
