MILAN, Tenn. — Gibson County mourns the unexpected loss of longtime public servant Leon Smith.

According to Gibson County Mayor Tom Witherspoon, Smith passed away from a heart attack Sunday afternoon at his home in Milan. Smith represented Gibson County’s 14th District for more than three terms. He also had served on the Milan City Board for more than 16 years. Fellow commissioners describe him as a devoted public servant who only wanted the best for those in his community. “Commissioner Smith was a man of his word,” Mayor Witherspoon recalled. “If he told you he was going to do something, he’d do it.” Witherspoon went on to say all Smith wanted was to leave the county better than he found it. Witherspoon and others believe he accomplished that goal. Funeral services will be held Friday at Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan. According to Witherspoon, Smith’s seat on the commission will be filled at the next county commission meeting in September.
