Shelby County names courthouse for D’Army Bailey
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Shelby County leaders have approved renaming the county courthouse in honor of a lawyer and judge who led the fight to save the Memphis motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and turn it into a national museum.
Media report the Shelby County Commission voted 11-0 Monday to name the courthouse for D’Army Bailey.
Bailey died July 12 at age 73 after a long illness.
Bailey assembled donors to buy the crumbling Lorraine Motel, where King was slain while standing on a balcony on April 4, 1968.
The motel ultimately became the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991. It has since undergone an extensive renovation.
