BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. – Haywood’s football team wasn’t dressed in full pads on Monday afternoon like most local schools in the state. The Tomcats are one of five West Tennessee schools off in Week 1. The extra week of preparation before their season opener allowed a lighter practice. “We’re trying to stay as regular as the game schedule as we can. I thought overall, everything has been going good up to this point,” head coach Steve Hookfin said. “Just keep working and keep everything as regular as possible.” The Tomcats did get a taste of game action in the Sports Plus Jamboree at South Side last Friday. Hookfin called their performance solid. “But what does solid really get you. There are a lot of little things we have to do better,” Hookfin said about their 7-0 victory against University School of Jackson. “If we can make a commitment to doing the little things, we can compete at a high level.” Another focal point for the team as the season nears is staying disciplined. Senior quarterback Bo Gillespie says the team is a lot more conditioned compared to previous years. “Not getting tired and playing all four quarters,” Gillespie said about the team’s identity this season. “Just staying focused the whole way through the game.” The Tomcats season opener in Week 2 is against Jackson Central Merry. While Hookfin plans to spend the Friday off with his family, a few players are thinking about seeing checking out their first opponent. “I think he [Hookfin] is wanting us to go to the JCM and North Side game if we are able,” Gillespie said. “But if not, take it easy and rest. Get ready for next week.”‘
