Seniors face deadline for free tuition program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – There’s less than a day left for high school seniors to apply for Tennessee promise, the governor’s free tuition program.

The Tennessean ( reports workers at the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation will be available to help students with the application process on Monday until midnight.

Tennessee Promise Director Mike Krause said many seniors completed applications in school, but hundreds could apply online before the deadline. The second year of the scholarship program had drawn more than 54,000 students as of Friday.

After completing an application, students must file a federal student aid form, attend two mandatory meetings and complete eight hours of community service.

Officials also are trying to recruit 3,000 mentors for the program by Nov. 20.
