CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — Five puppies go missing in the night from an animal shelter at the hand of thieves. Three of the dogs were expected to leave for their new homes in New England, Wednesday. Staff with Companion Pet Rescue and Transport said the missing dogs were accounted for Monday night. “It’s never happened before and I was just running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to figure out where in the heck they were,” Kennel manager Sarah Stringfellow said. Stringfellow noticed the mixed breed pups were missing Tuesday when she went to prepare them for transport. “These dogs were headed to good homes,” she said. Rick Bowen with CPRT said the staff is heartbroken. “We never dreamed this would happen,” he said. Bowen said in eight years, they animal rescue has never had a problem at their facility. Two of the missing dogs had recently been rescued from a kill shelter in Mississippi. “It’s just sad, because now we don’t know what’s going to happen to them,” Bowen said. Staff said they fear the dogs will end up on craigslist or become bait dogs for fighting. “They might not be able to get rid of these the way they want to,” Bowen said,” So they’ll sell them to a fighter.” Bowen plans to install a gate, new locks and beef up on sight security at the shelter following the theft. The non-profit said about $900 had been put into the puppies for health certification and vetting. A $500 reward is being offered for the safe return of the puppies.
