Rape trial for ex-Vol Williams to be rescheduled again
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The rape trial of former Tennessee cornerback Michael Williams is being rescheduled again.
Williams’ trial was scheduled to begin Sept. 29, but Knox County Criminal Court Judge Bob McGee granted the defense’s motion for a continuance Thursday. A new trial date will be determined Monday.
Williams and former Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson each face two counts of aggravated rape. Knoxville police say the incident occurred during a party at an apartment in the early morning of Nov. 16.
Johnson’s trial is tentatively set for June 27.
Williams originally was set to go on trial Aug. 24, but it was rescheduled so lawyers for Williams and Johnson could obtain cellphone and social media communications with certain witnesses.
Defense lawyers said Thursday they still haven’t obtained all the communications they were seeking.
