JACKSON, Tenn. — The steeple atop First Baptist Church in midtown Jackson was taken down, Thursday. Church leaders said it was due to a safety concern. Crews used a heavy duty crane to take down the very visible portion of the church. Leaders at First Baptist said the steeple, which has been on top of the building for 30 years, recently began leaning. An inspection by construction engineers found its base was deteriorating. “Once they looked at it and said if a bad wind came it could fall, we knew something had to be done,” said Pastor Justin Winscott. Church officials said they do not know how long it will take to make the repairs. However, they do plan to put the steeple back up.
