Fire, death under investigation in Savannah
HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — A fire and death on Cherry Street in Savannah are under investigation.
“The burned remains of an unknown individual were discovered in the charred remains of a vacant building by the Savannah Fire Department and Savannah Police Department,” Josh DeVine, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said via email.
According to residents familiar with the vacant property, the building was an old barn and may have been used by multiple vagrants.
“They had her fixed up pretty nice,” Dewayne Hardin said.
“You had carpet, your garbage can, food, chairs, anything that could be drug up I guess,” he said.
The identity of the person found in the burnt building has not been released. Agents said the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Shelby County for an autopsy.
Officials have not said whether they have determined the cause of the fire.
