Union University prepares athletes for academic success
JACKSON, Tenn. — With classes at Union University getting ready to start back, student athletes and their academics is something faculty and staff are not taking lightly.
“To be a college athlete in this day and age, it requires a great deal of time, and part of that is we partner with the Hundley Center for athletes.”
The Hundley Center provides academic enrichment for students who need help balancing class work with other jobs or commitments. Director of the Hundley Center Renee Jones said when you combine athletes with academics you’re sure to achieve academic success.
“You’ve got to get started early,” Jones said. “You have to make sure you understand what’s required of you, so read the syllabus, understand what the professors want, and then create a plan.”
Jones said one of the biggest concerns student athletes have is knowing how to manage their time.
“It’s about understanding ‘how do I get my play time in there,'” Jones said. “‘I have to practice, I have to have a social life, I have classes, etc., but I need to balance my time.'”
“Our coaches are very good about checking on them, making sure that their grades not only to remain eligible but to also help them progress towards their degree,” Tommy Sadler said.
Union University requires athletes to show progress in their declared major in order to continue playing a sport, and Sadler said in order for students to be successful there cannot be an “I” in “team.”
“As a staff member, as a faculty member, whatever your job is, you’re taking time for students and to help them achieve their goals,” Sadler said.
The Hundley Center also offers online services to assist the needs of students who can’t meet in person.
