Awards held for West Tennessee’s Rockabilly Readers
JACKSON, Tenn. – A local program honored young children who have gone the extra mile in literacy.
Rockabilly Readers and United Way of West Tennessee presented awards to contest winners who read for 20 minutes or more a day.
Students were given a month to color in each badge on their sheets.
This program was created to excite and push kids from kindergarten to third grade into reading books to increase their understanding.
Each child had the opportunity to high-five or hug the Rockabilly mascot.
They were also presented with a certificate and a badge to attach to their bookbags.
“The big finale will be a trip to Rockabilly stadium and this will be before the end of the school year, so it’s gonna be a special game. It won’t be a Rockabilly game, but it will be a special game and the kids are going to get to come out and they are going to get some royal treatment,” said Lisa Bastien, the Vice President of the Jackson Rockabillys.
“United Way of West Tennessee has really positioned itself as a leader in the early literacy space. So I’m excited that this program has gotten as much participation as it had,” said Olivia Abernathy, the Senior Director of Childhood Success for United Way West Tennessee.
Your child still has an opportunity to participate in the next contest which will begin in January.
