Local law officials talk about winter weather in West Tennessee

LEXINGTON, Tenn. – Local law officials shared insight on how drivers can stay safe on the road.

Although Monday is a national holiday and some businesses are closed, some still have to clock into work on a snow day.

We spoke to Lexington Police Chief Jeff Middleton, who stated that he understands the need for essential workers who have to drive on the road.

“There are those individuals in our community who work at the hospitals and the nursing homes that have to get out and care for people. And in instances where those essential workers need a ride to work, we will help them with that,” Middleton said.

Middleton stated that they are doing their best to keep the community informed.

“We’re trying to keep our community updated on the current conditions of the roads here in our community. The primary and the secondary roadways right now are still very much snow-covered,” Middleton said.

Milan Police Lt. Brian Hutson says that he just wants everyone to be safe.

“During stuff like this, I mean, if you don’t have to be out then don’t be out. The roads are covered. The main roads are covered. Everything is slicked over right now,” Hutson said.

Lt. Chris Hosick, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, stated that the troopers are putting in extra time to make sure others are alright.

“We’ve got troopers that are working very hard right now. We’ve adjusted shifts to maximize manpower. Most of the troopers are answering a lot disabled motorists calls. And with the extreme cold and the weather, we are certainly trying to get those people off the road as quickly as we can,” Hosick said.

A few tips to remember while driving: Don’t slam on the brakes too hard and allow at least four car lengths in between cars while driving in the snow.

Most officials are advising the community not to come out unless they have to. Be safe and be warm.

If you happen to run into trouble while driving, stay in your car and contact your local authorities.
