Empowering youth, strategies for navigating adversity
JACKSON, Tenn. — How can we help young people navigate a world of ongoing adversities, while continuing to recover from traumatic and stressful events of the past?
First, model self-care. Parents and caregivers can encourage important skills and priorities through leading by example.
Second, encourage social connections. Positive relationships, like mentors and peers, contribute to a sense of belonging, while providing vital physical and mental health benefits.
Next, lean into a routine. Stability and consistency reduce anxiety and stress, helping young people feel safe and nurtured.
“In order to be able to provide that, as adults, most of us need to make sure that we have our stress in check. So when we talk about these self care tips, they’re equally as important for us as adults as they are for the young people we care for,” said Nadine Burke Harris, renowned Pediatrician and Author.
And finally, practice resilience-building habits. Active movement, balanced nutrition, time in nature, adequate sleep, and mindfulness is great for all ages.
