JMCSS School Board holds meeting to discuss superintendent’s performance

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson-Madison County Superintendent will receive a bonus after a performance review.

The Jackson-Madison County School Board held a special-called meeting Wednesday to discuss the performance of the district’s Superintendent, Dr. Marlon King.

King was evaluated on performance as well as a competitive compensation metric.

Last year the competitive compensation metric was added to the reviewing process.

The board says this area is based off achievements such as pre-k scores, third and fourth grade retention, math scores, graduation rates and employee retention.

“He has an opportunity to receive $45-thousand dollars in bonus. So with the data we already have, he will get about $20-thousand and we are waiting on the rest of the data which probably won’t come from the state until around November of this year,” said Pete Johnson, school board chairman.

As of now, there are more than 20 outstanding categories that King has not been reviewed in because data has not been released.

“The evaluation–he has excelled in all categories. Then when you look at the metrics; and the fact that he can max out $45-thousand dollars and we only have 50-percent of the data here and he’s receiving $20-thousand, it gives you a really good idea of the performance,” said Johnson.

Johnson says professional development is key when reviewing the superintendent’s leadership.

Board members say this area is looked at weekly rather than quarterly or annually when state numbers come out.

“So we know where students are, and teachers know where their students are. When they get the data and they know how to disseminate it through professional development, it only helps us improve the outcome of our students,” said Johnson.

Dr. King will be able to decide whether to receive payout now or wait until later in the year when all of the data is gathered.

Johnson further commented that King looks not at the metrics in his evaluation, but beyond that, and how to improve the system and help the students.
