32-year sentence announced for man convicted of Jackson robberies

District Attorney General Jody Pickens Announces 32-Year Sentence for Serial Robber

In May and June of 2023, the Jackson Police Department investigated a series of robberies at local businesses across Jackson. On May 15, 2023, a black male wearing a face mask and gloves robbed a Campbell Street liquor store clerk at gunpoint, firing a handgun inside the store and taking money and a gun from the owners. On June 25, 2023, an individual of the same description robbed a Bargain Hunt employee at gunpoint, taking money from a register before fleeing the store. On June 27, 2023, the same individual robbed the Los Portales on Old Hickory Boulevard, again firing a handgun inside the business while demanding money from a register. After robbing Los Portales, the individual then went back to Bargain Hunt located next door and attempted to rob it again, this time firing multiple shots inside the store in an attempt to gain access to a register.

Captain Chris Chestnut, Lieutenant Nick Donald, and Investigators Joey Williams and Ron Pugh of the Jackson Police Department led the investigation. On July 14, 2023, the Jackson Police Department arrested Curtis Malik Jackson of Jackson, Tennessee, as a suspect in all the recent robberies. Jackson confessed to the robberies, and during execution of a search warrant of his home, officers located a firearm consistent with the one used in the robberies.

On December 4, 2023, a Madison County Grand Jury indicted Curtis Malik Jackson for the string of robberies he committed. The Grand Jury also indicted him for being a Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm. At the time he committed the robberies, Jackson had three prior convictions for Aggravated Burglary, one conviction for Attempted Burglary, three prior felony convictions for Theft, and one prior felony conviction for Vandalism.

On September 19, 2024, before Judge Joseph Howell, Jackson pled guilty to all the indicted offenses and received a total sentence of thirty–two (32) years to serve without parole in the Tennessee Department of Correction. Assistant District Attorney Brad Champine represented the State of Tennessee.

“As Mr. Jackson’s actions demonstrate, violent felons and firearms do not mix,” said District Attorney General Jody Pickens. “Thankfully, none of the victims working at these businesses were physically harmed. And though we can never fully restore their sense of safety in their places of work, we are thankful that this violent felon’s days of terrorizing our community are over. We hope other felons take note: Mr. Jackson, despite numerous previous incarcerations and opportunities at rehabilitation, chose a life of crime yet again. He may have gotten his hands on some money in the short term but look what his choices have cost him and his family.“
