2 Brownsville businesses celebrate over 100 years of service

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Two local businesses are being celebrated for reaching a special milestone!

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development presented both Union Gin Company and InSouth Bank in Brownsville with a certificate Monday. This recognition honored their services to the community and the state of Tennessee for more than 100 years.

Southwest Tennessee Regional Director Tracey Exum was present for the appreciation ceremony Monday morning.

Union Gin Company is a cotton mill that has been in business since 1913.

“We plant the cotton, you know, first mid-May and we’ll start picking September, first of October, into fall. So we do that, and then we ship the cotton to the warehouse and then it’s sold all over the world and then they process it,” said Bradley Williams, owner of Union Gin Company.

Williams shared that it takes a lot of care, time and consultants to keep everything going.

InSouth is a family-oriented company involved in their community.

“It’s incredible. This speaks to our history and the value and the care to our community. It used to be ‘Brownsville Bank,’ now it’s InSouth bank, but it’s still a hometown bank and for over decades, and now a century, of service to the community. You just don’t find a rich tradition in every city and we’re very proud to have it here in Brownsville,” said Brownsville Mayor William Rawls.

According to Mayor Rawls, InSouth is the oldest community bank in the state of Tennessee.
