Year in review: Looking back at the top stories from 2024
JACKSON, Tenn. — As the year comes to an end, we want to take a moment to highlight a few stories that stood out in 2024.
Holly Bobo Case: New developments, key witness admits to lying at trial
Beginning the year on February 6, Zachary Adams was convicted of the murder of 20-year-old Holly Bobo.
However, this year, co-defendant Jason Autry confessed to lying on the stand and making up the story.
It was said during the time of Adams’ trial that none of the evidence traced back to Adams.
Former nurse practitioner Jeff Young sentenced to 20 years in prison
In March, former nurse practitioner Jeff Young or the ‘Roc Doc’ was sentenced to 40 years after over-prescribing medication to patients.
Young confessed during that time he was an alcoholic which clouded his mind and judgement.
A judge from the us district court in Memphis decided on 20 years.
Construction for Senior Center underway
After things began to heat up across West Tennessee, the Hub City announced plans to begin construction for the Senior Center.
The Tennessee Economic and Community Development department gave a grant to Christi David with the City of Jackson Parks and Recreation.
This grant will help furnish the new center. This is hoped to be completed by January of 2025.
Petition calls for principal’s termination after graduation incident
Three students from Greenfield High School were ushered to sit on the bleachers all while their graduating class sat together in the center of the gym floor.
“I genuinely think it was more about her image. She cared more about her image than her students,” said Kennedy Lee, one of the three students.
These students were discouraged to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas due to various health issues. We spoke with Lee who shared that, after visiting a physician, she was cleared to walk across the stage.
Lee and other classmates petitioned to have their principal Jamie Doster removed from their position.
New evidence suggests 8-year-old was murdered by her cousin, who was 12
In July, one mother received the unfortunate news that her daughter would not return home.
“Our office will ask for three things. One we’re going to ask that the child be detained during this process. Number two we’re going to ask for a JC-20, which is a juvenile court mental health evaluation, and number three we’re going to file, or we will give notice at that time, that we intend to transfer this child as an adult,” said 28th Judicial District Attorney General Frederick Agee.
On Monday, July 15 the Humboldt Police Department dispatched to a call on Mitchell Street of an unresponsive juvenile.
After video evidence it was determined that this 8-year-old juvenile was strangled in her sleep by her 12-year-old female cousin.
‘1,000-Lb Sisters’ star arrested at Alamo’s safari park
In September, a reality TV star visited the Alamo Safari Park and claimed a camel bit them. As, Crockett county deputies arrived to the scene after the alleged victim was bitten.
While there deputies smelled a foul odor coming from Amy Slaton Halterman ‘1,000-Lb Sisters’ star and Brian Scott Lovvorn vehicle.
Both were arrested with charges on illegal possession of schedule I, what investigators believed to be illegal mushrooms, illegal possession of schedule VI which is believed to be marijuana and two counts of child endangerment.
McKellar-Sipes celebrates new air provider with inaugural flight
In November, it wasn’t a bird, however, it was a plane. McKellar Sipes Airport of Madison County welcomed the new Denver Air Connection.
“There are people here that, over the years, have looked at the single-engine airplanes that we’ve offered and not been comfortable flying on a single-engine airplane. It’s a very safe airplane. The safety record is really good. But, it’s what you perceive and a lot of people perceive if they’re not on a jet, they’re not on a real airline,” said Steve Smith, executive director for the Jackson-Madison Airport Authority.
This new plane offers more space, quicker travel, an added destination to Chicago, and travel through rainy days. Residents of the Hub City and surrounding counties can now book flights through Expedia, Hotwire and Google Flights.
Topping Out Ceremony held at new Pope School campus
And topping off the year with a Hub City construction site nearing opening day.
Pope Elementary also known as ‘New Pope’ had their topping off celebration.
Local city leaders, along with JMCSS Board of Education, and a few educators from Pope Elementary were able to sign the final beam.
This school is expected to open in fall of 2025.
“I actually went to Pope School. Then I did my student teaching there and so I just think there’s such a rich heritage of our school system that is in pope and it sits in a great community in north Jackson. I think the whole community will be excited to see it,” said Spurgeon.
