Voluntary manslaughter charge against David Swift dismissed

DYER COUNTY, Tenn. — Officials confirm that David Swift, who recently was found not guilty in the murder trial of his wife, is no longer being charged with voluntary manslaughter.

Karen Swift, David’s first wife, was first reported missing on October 30, 2011, and her body was later found on December 10, 2011. Years later, in 2022, Swift was indicted for the murder of Karen.

Beginning in 2024, the lengthy trial began where Swift was ultimately found not guilty of murder and the lesser charges included in the original indictment of voluntary manslaughter and attempted voluntary manslaughter were ruled a mistrial.

However, just a month later, a grand jury indicted him for the voluntary manslaughter charge.

Monday, we spoke with the prosecutor, 29th Judicial District Attorney General Danny Goodman, who confirms that that the judge has now dismissed this charge, agreeing with the defense that the statue of limitations regarding the case has run out.

Goodman says he has to go through the attorney general’s office in order to appeal, but says he will “do everything I can to encourage them” to appeal the decision.

Swift is still facing separate charges in Alabama. He is accused of stalking his second wife, who he has since divorced from.
