Gibson County Fair returns for a week of fun and festivities

TRENTON, Tenn. — The oldest continuously-running fair in the south is back for its 170th year, bringing a week of livestock shows, exhibits, and carnival fun.

Monday was a busy day in Trenton as the 170th Gibson County Fair kicks off this week, running August 25-30.

The junior livestock shows started early Monday morning.

“Gibson County kids who have fed and cared for a livestock project will show those animals today, and then there will be a sponsor sale tonight where those kids will sell those animals,” said Andy Zarecor, member of the Gibson County Fair Board of Directors. “Local business will bid and support the kids and reward them for a summer full of hard work.”

Photography, canning, quilting and horticulture exhibits were entered in over the weekend, with judging set to take place Monday morning.

“We usually have 50-60 entries or better,” Zarecor said. “It’s always great when everybody comes out and shares their garden creation with us for the fair.”

“But really the heart of the fair is still the same, we want to showcase the people who have entered different things from around Gibson County,” said Gibson County Mayor Nelson Cunningham. “We want to showcase the people who have worked hard with livestock projects.”

The carnival opens at 6:30 p.m. for Buddy Night, when you can buy one armband for $25 and get one free.

And “Gibson’s Got Talent” takes the main stage at 7 p.m. for a family-friendly talent show.

The rodeo takes place Thursday, the tractor pull will be on Friday, and the Demolition Derby will be held Saturday.
