American Legion’s national commander meets with West TN veterans
HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — The American Legion’s national commander visited the Humboldt Veterans Home Tuesday.
Newly elected national commander Dan K. Wiley visited Gibson, Madison, and Shelby counties Tuesday to meet with legion members and veterans.
It’s an opportunity to build connections in local communities, and share the vision and goals of the American Legion.
Wiley is a strong advocate for the American Legion’s be the one outreach mission to prevent suicide and believes that the American Legion family which includes the sons of the American Legion, the American legion auxiliary, and the American Legion riders is stronger when it is working together to champion veteran issues.
“It lets the veterans in our community know that our national organization, with about a million and a half members, cares about them and of course what we advocate for. He’s taken very serious in Washington, D.C. Whenever he goes to testify before congress, so it’s important for him to come here and listen to what the veterans at the local level have to say. That’s kind of what he’s here for, plus also to boost morale, and that’s kind of the importance of the visit,” said Todd McKinley, TN state department commander for the American Legion.
The American legion–the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization with a membership of 1.4 million–is dedicated to the motto of “veterans strengthening America.”
