Better Business Bureau warns of costly online scams hitting local counties

JACKSON, Tenn. — Another scam is on the rise, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about auto parts scams.

Reports show recent scam activity in Madison and Hardin County. Victims trying to purchase car parts online were scammed out of $3,000.

They were looking for engines, mufflers, batteries, and other items. Toddnetta Trice, with the Better Business Bureau, tells us exactly how this scam works.

“Especially when it comes to working on their cars and looking for auto parts, instead of going to the actual dealer, consumers actually choose to look online for cheaper prices. So that has resulted in the increase of auto part scams,” said Trice.

It is always important to make sure you are dealing with a legitimate business.

Especially when you are purchasing something online. Trice gives us tips on how to avoid these scams.

“Read reviews before buying. Make sure that you search for auto parts online by checking reviews. Making sure they have reliable reviews can help you distinguish between genuine spare parts online versus counterfeit products,” said Trice.

When purchasing items online you should use a credit card if possible, Trice tells us why.

“Definitely, with the credit card, you have protections. Way more than the debit card. Stay away from the peer to peer apps. If you are looking in the marketplace or something like that and someone says I want this Cashapp or Zelle, I would stay away from it,” said Trice.

A big factor in why local victims were not able to get their money back is because they used debit cards. To look up a company on the Better Business Bureau’s scam tracker system, click here.
