Girlfriend’s cheating prank ends with shots fired into car full of people, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – Police in North Carolina say a man is accused of firing shots into a car full of people, including his girlfriend, after a prank gone wrong.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, 20-year-old Shyhied Ivey fired three shots into a car carrying five people, including his girlfriend, Naveah Covington, about 11:40 p.m. April 4.

An affidavit said Covington and her four friends were getting food at Camp North End in Charlotte when they decided to play a prank on Ivey, whom Covington had been dating for five months.

The affidavit said Covington had a male friend call Ivey and pretend she was cheating on Ivey with him.

Court records say after the prank, an angry Ivey tracked his girlfriend’s phone using Find My iPhone, found the car she and her friends were in and followed them while driving recklessly, including tailgating them.

Ivey tried to get the driver, one of Covington’s friends, to stop by firing multiple shots into the air, according to the affidavit.

When the driver stopped at a red light, the affidavit said Ivey pulled up next to the car and fired three shots into it before driving off.

Ivey is facing several charges, including five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied conveyance in operation, domestic violence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ivey is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. He was convicted of felony larceny of a motor vehicle in December 2023 and sentenced to 24 months probation.
