Quadruple amputee cornhole player indicted on murder charge in shooting that killed friend

LA PLATA, Md. (WUSA) – A Maryland grand jury has indicted a champion cornhole player and quadruple amputee on a first-degree murder charge in connection with a shooting that killed his friend, according to prosecutors.

Authorities say 27-year-old Dayton Webber shot and killed his friend, 27-year-old Bradrick Wells, inside a car following an argument March 22. Webber, whose arms and legs were amputated when he was 10 months old, faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

“We’re dealing with a homicide. Someone lost their life, and from that base perspective, our job is to make sure that we put the case together,” said Charles County Deputy State’s Attorney Karen Piper Mitchell.

The indictment, handed down Friday, also includes two counts of reckless endangerment and a charge of having a loaded handgun in a vehicle.

Webber’s attorney, Hammad Matin, argues his client acted in self-defense.

“He had to kill or be killed. That’s what this case is,” Matin said. “I think that evidence is going to be clear that this was something that was not planned, something that was not premeditated. This is something that was a person in fear that did not know how to handle a situation where there’s such a traumatic event.”

Prosecutors, however, dispute that claim.

“Based on the investigation that we’ve seen and from the witnesses’ statements and everything, we see no evidence of self-defense. So, we move forward on the indictment,” Mitchell said.

She also thanked investigators who worked to preserve key evidence in the case, including items collected after Webber was treated at a hospital in Virginia.

“He was treated by the hospital. So, again, anything that they had contact with, making sure that we have chain of custody,” she said.

Mitchell says the case ultimately centers on understanding what led to the fatal encounter.

No trial date has been set yet.
