David Cornell Travis is charged with attempted first-degree murder after police say he shot a man outside a residence in the 900 block of East College Street, according to court documents.

Officers responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. Monday where they found the victim, a 28-year-old man, inside with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The man told police he had answered a knock at his door and that a man had told him someone needed to speak to him.

When he went outside, the victim told police another man, later identified as Travis, confronted him and then pulled a handgun and shot him, according to the affidavit.

As the victim turned to run back inside, Travis reportedly shot at him a second time.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He was later able to identify Travis as the gunman from a photo lineup, according to police.
