Jackson-Madison Co. School Board District 2 candidates share opinions
Jackson, Tenn — Both Kevin Alexander and Bryan Barry say they are the best choice to fill the open district two seat.
“I’m around our kids a lot, I’m around our teachers.” Youth Pastor Kevin Alexander said. “I’m in the schools on a regular basis visiting my students and I just have a heart for kids.”
“I’ve got a history in the private sector dealing with the public everyday and political issues as well.”Bryan Barry said “I feel like I’m suited to jump into this seat and do some good things.”
Both candidates agree the core of a good system starts in the classroom.
“If we can’t get the basics right, which is what takes place in the classroom and is most important, then nothing else will be right either. Alexander said, “And I think that’s important and that’s where my focus is.”
“Good core group of teachers that are taken care of and that are valued.” Barry said. “We have no hope in getting a good education out of this public school system.”
When it comes to the search for a new superintendent candidates say they want someone local.
“First and foremost I want a local superintendent. I don’t want to go shopping in other states to find someone.” Alexander said. “We have plenty of qualified people here I believe.”
“Number one it must be a local superintendent.” Barry said. “I’ve talked to a lot of people, I have went door to door and I have talked to a lot of voters in my district and every single person said they want somebody local.”
And what will they do if elected?
“We need to work together at coming up with a plan over the next 10-15 years that can bring our education system in Madison County back.” Alexander said.
“Moving forward, we got to really start focusing again on the budget. We got to continue to make sure that is a priority to get those things handled particularly on the capitol side.” Barry said.
Early voting continues through July 30th. Election day is August 4th, 2016.
