Tips for students coping with anxiety for first day back to school

JACKSON, Tenn.-The first day of school is quickly approaching for many West Tennessee students. Jackson-Madison County students return to class in just a week and a half.

State health officials said children experiencing brand new surroundings, for the first time, can experience excitement and anxiety.
Local educators encourage parents to plan out a schedule to prepare their student for the first day and beyond.

“Any time they come back from a break or starting a new situation is get the student or children on a routine so that they aren’t in shock when they return,” said Principal Ryan Kirkbride, of Thelma Barker Elementary.

The department also says a strong support system can make a big difference, ensuring children are ready both socially and emotionally to achieve academic success.
