Retired nurse undergoes liver transplant
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A retired nurse from Crossville has undergone a live-saving liver transplant at a Memphis hospital.
Beverly Loyd was previously turned down because of insurance complications and had been referred to hospice care providers until Methodist University Hospital agreed to perform the surgery at no cost.
Jane Beasley, a paralegal with the Tennessee Justice Center, which had been working to obtain a transplant for Loyd, said the family messaged her Thursday morning that Loyd was awake and stable after the surgery.
Loyd’s liver had been ravaged by hepatitis-C, which she contracted during a blood transfusion. She has medical insurance, but it did not cover the cost of a transplant and her dwindling savings precluded her from getting government-funded medical care.
