November 1 is National Author’s Day. It is all about recognizing and celebrating authors. Because of them, we have so many books to be thankful for.

It is also a day to celebrate and explore new books and new authors.

We spoke with Audrey Birnbaum, M.D., who recently released a new book titled, “American Wolf: From Nazi Refugee to American Spy.”

It is based on the true story of Birnbaum’s father, Jack Wolf Schwersenz.

It follows his family’s nail-biting escape from Nazi Germany to the U.S., and his survival against untold odds.

“It was an escape story, it was an immigration story, and then he had returned to Germany as a spy for the U.S. Army, so it was just kind of a riveting story that I thought I would try my hand at turning it into something readable,” Birnbaum said.

Birnbaum says it’s also a story about identity, and is a resounding testament to the triumph of the human spirit.
