Local Woman with MS Swims Laps to Raise Awareness

DYER, Tenn. – A Gibson County woman is raising awareness about a disease that impacts the quality of life of thousands of people across the country. But Christy King said it does not have to be that way, and she is using a swimming pool to prove it. Rain or shine, you will find King and her son, Carson, swimming 10 laps a day this month to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis. “I thought 10 laps would be a good number,” King said. “I may have over-extended my thinking when I wrote down 10 laps, but we are doing it.” Christy was diagnosed with MS more than six years ago. “It’s called multiple sclerosis because it has multiple scars. Sclerosis means scars on your brain, your optic nerves and your spinal cord.” Her goal is to raise $500 for the Multiple Sclerosis Association, which will go toward finding a cure, and helping others pay for expensive treatments. “I take an infusion, a once a month infusion, Tysabri, and it’s $10,000 a month.” She hopes to show others with the disease that it does not have to take over their life. “I believe people with MS sometimes get down, get upset, get discouraged that they can’t do anything, and I want to show that they can, even if it is just swimming 10 laps.” Which King said is a good start to finding a cure.
