Construction for Senior Center underway

JACKSON, Tenn. — We have a follow up to a story we first brought to you on broadband grants.

Construction on the long-awaited Senior Center is underway.

With its completion comes the opportunity for seniors to come together for community, and further their knowledge.

“We have received a grant from Tennessee Economic and Community Development Department. That grant is going to fund and furnish our senior center that we’re currently building. It is a part of the Connected Community Facilities grant,” said Christi David, the Park Operations Manager with the City of Jackson Recreation and Parks Department.

The Connected Community Facilities is one of four new programs launched by the TNECD.

David continued to share how the money under the CCF program would be used.

“We were awarded a little over $405,000. We expect to be under contract with that funding and within the next month and a half, two months. And once the building is finished, we will start spending that funding to again furnish the building supply computers for the building tables and chairs, everything that we are going to need, this funding will cover,” said David.

David also shared the hope for the completion of the building is January, 2025.

“We have several community bank partners that have come on board with us for this: United way, University of Memphis at Lambuth, UT TSU Extension, Western TN Healthcare. They have all agreed to be partners with us. So as we get closer to opening we’ll kind of start meeting and laying out what that partnership looks like and how we can meet those needs,” said David.

Between now and January, meetings will ensure the needs of incoming senior citizens will be met.

David also says some of the activities expected will include pickleball and classes that educate using online sites like social media, among other resources.

The Senior Center is located in Westwood Gardens.
