McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport set to complete runway 2-20 paving, preparing for new jet service

PRESS RELEASE FROM JACKSON-MADISON CO. AIRPORT AUTHORITY:

JACKSON, Tenn. – McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport (MKL) is excited to announce that paving on the final 4,000 feet of Runway 2-20 is set to begin shortly after Labor Day.

This marks a significant milestone in the comprehensive runway reconstruction project that has been underway throughout the year. The entire 6,000-foot runway has been meticulously rebuilt, with completion on schedule for early November 2024. According to Steve Smith, Executive Director at Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority, the new runway will be fully operational by mid-November, just in time to welcome Denver Air Connection, which will begin providing jet service to the airport starting December 1st.

This new service represents a substantial upgrade in the airport’s capabilities and is expected to increase travel options for both business and leisure travelers in the region.

“The completion of Runway 2-20 is a major step forward for McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport and the entire community we serve,” said Steve Smith. “This project has been a tremendous effort by our team and partners, and we are thrilled to soon offer expanded service options with Denver Air Connection. This will open up new opportunities for our passengers and stimulate economic growth in the region.”

As part of the runway reconstruction project, McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport has been coordinating with aircraft owners who relocated their aircraft during construction. These owners will be notified in mid to late October that they can return to MKL, ensuring a smooth transition as the runway nears completion.

Smith also emphasized the importance of support received throughout the project.

“We are grateful for the patience and cooperation of our community, local/state/national representatives, aircraft owners, and board during this time. The enhancements to our infrastructure will not only improve our operations but will also make MKL a more attractive destination for new routes and services,” he added.

The new and improved runway and other airport improvements will provide a robust foundation for the future of McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, supporting the growth of air traffic and enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
