Local teachers surprised with educator award, cash prize at Jackson schools

JACKSON, Tenn. — Out of 1,700 applications, 20 educators in the state of Tennessee were selected for an inaugural award.

Tennesseans for Quality Early Education presented their first ever Tennessee Early Education Awards.

“We really got to know them by looking into why they chose early education, how they educate in their classrooms and why they have such a passion for the children in their classrooms. These 20 early educators stood out amongst their peers because they truly just had the passion and the drive and the dedication behind it,” said Jenny White, marketing director for Tennesseans for Quality Early Education.

These educators will win $1,000 from Lakeshore Learning to supply their classrooms. And another $1,000 for themselves. Educators were nominated by parents, other educators, or even themselves.

“There isn’t always acknowledgement for these early educators. We’re talking about birth through third grade, these are the key years. For us, our north star is reading and math proficiency by third grade. So, we want to really celebrate those teachers who are laying the foundations for some of those most important years in the school,” said White.

One recipient was Jamaica Kirby, a kindergarten teacher at Arlington Elementary in Jackson. Kirby was still in shock after receiving it but is grateful to award her class with new toys for their classroom.

“I live by the motto of being the change. I remember my schooling growing up and if I can make everything just dreamy and magical for my kids, I will do that. So they can become lifelong learners and love to come to school everyday,” said Kirby.

Another West Tennessee winner is a first grade teacher at Parsons Elementary, Misty Greenway. She was nominated by her sister and has plans to buy her students bags to carry their books to and from the library.

“Oh my gosh, I just love teaching. Just seeing them light up — seeing them getting excited about learning because that’s what it’s all about. It’s all about having fun, it’s about the fun of learning and that’s how they grow,” said Greenway.

Both teachers are still in shock from receiving this award but are extremely grateful. Along with the cash prizes both teachers will join the other winners in Nashville for a ceremony in their honor.
