USJ holds mock election to help engage students in electoral process

JACKSON, Tenn. — The University School of Jackson Lower School held a mock election Tuesday.

This event was designed to engage students in the electoral process and help them understand the importance of voting and civic participation. The school also made this a relevant activity for students by allowing the ‘candidates’ to be two non-profit organizations the lower school students will vote between to support and serve for their Christmas service project.

Upper grades nominated the Ronald McDonald House and the Star Center. The 4th and 5th graders also presented campaign videos, posters and more to grades K-3rd. Students learned about the electoral process, the significance of voting, and the responsibilities of citizenship and the candidates. They also completed voter registration cards.

“Students got to fill those out with their first and last name, their grade, their school and then they got to do a signature. It also had a little box for them to draw a picture of themselves to show who they are and when they came in to vote they were asked their name to match their voter registration card and then they were escorted on the stage to vote,” said Anna English, 4th grade teacher.

Tuesday, students cast their votes just like in a real election. Post voting, they received an ‘I voted’ sticker designed by a fellow student.
