Community Demands Change

A Weakley County community is demanding change, after a wreck earlier in the week, claimed the life of a Gleason mother. Residents along Highway 190 say that stretch of road is a raceway, and they want something done to prevent other fatalities. Eddie Edwards, a resident, adds, “Drivers will tell you to get out of the way and yell, you slowpoke, move.” Edwards says he would rather be a slowpoke and safe, then be involved in a situation where officers are outlining the scene of a wreck. Edwards, says, “I would call it a raceway.” And that raceway, according to Edwards, is along Highway 190, near Gleason. Thursday, a mother of five, lost her life when the car she was driving hit an embankment, flipped, and pinned her underneath. Sgt. James Ford, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, adds, “It’s a curvy road, yes, it’s a curvy road. It’s a state highway and the speed limit is 55. It’s a heavily traveled road.” Now, troopers cannot say for sure if speed was a factor, however, residents say they are sick of seeing flashing blue lights, and they want something done to prevent this from happening to anyone else. Edwards, adds, “I think they need to extra patrol this road. I think they need to put up some speed limit signs and they should slow down to 45. I think they should do it.” Edwards says he can count on one hand the number of fatalities he has seen right outside his front door, and it scares him. And that is why the community is calling on their county leaders, and asking you to do the same.
