A new plan is in the works for McNairy County as a “green” movement hopes to make Selmer residents more eco-friendly. A new curbside pick-up service would provide residents either a weekly or every other week service that would otherwise require residents to drive down to the McNairy County Solid Waste Recycling Center. “I think people would utilize it a lot more, because people’s lives are really busy instead of having to take it somewhere physically,” says Patricia Burns, a Selmer resident. “If there was a place they could put it on the side of the street and the sanitation pick it up, I think people would be more involved.” Under the current system, the recycling center is open one day a week but Selmer Mayor David Robinson hopes the new system would allow the center to open for more than one day a week, which would help county residents. “I think people would utilize it a lot more, because people’s lives are really busy and instead of having to take it somewhere physically if there was place they could put it on the side of the street and the sanitation pick it up,” said Robinson. “I think people would become more involved,” says Patricia Gill-Burns, a resident of Selmer The city currently spends between $30-$40,000 per year for their landfill service.
