Martin Landfill Full; What Now
For more than 50 years, anyone in the city of Martin could put things too big for the normal trash on the corner, and the city would pick them up and take them to the landfill. “I really cant see this town doing without a landfill,” said landfill overseer, Mark Bolten. Since the 1990’s, the city of Martin has been running their own material landfill. The city said they invest more than $340,000 dollars a year, to send trucks into the community to pick up unwanted items. “People just cleaning out they’re garages, clothes, toys, we don’t take no chemicals, hazardous waste or tires,” said Bolten. Bolten says the landfill is about 30 feet deep under the ground. “To go any higher it would probably have to be re classified as another landfill and the expenditure of the cost would be tremendous.” Mayor Mark Brundige agrees. He estimates it will cost the city at least $1.7 million to build a new landfill, so he is trying to work with what he has now. “We’ve changed the system around no longer taking building materials from contractors.” Landfill overseer, Mark Bolten said the city’s plan is not good enough. “This landfill, the way its going right now, I expect by the end of this year it will be completely full.”
