SELMER, Tenn. — The Selmer Police Department sealed off Van McMahan’s private law office after a suspicious package was discovered in the mail. “It did not have a return address on it and it sort of felt like something was in it, not just paper, and it sort raised a little bit of suspicion,” Van McMahan said. McMahan’s secretary immediately called Selmer Police. Once Lieutenant Roger Rickman saw the envelope in quesiton, he called the Jackson Bomb Squad. “I instructed her (the secretary) to lay the package down, and evacuate the building,” Lt. Rickman said. “Once the bomb squad got there, they x-rayed the package.” In this case, the package contained nothing more than an ink pen that was sent by the National Pen Company as an advertisement. But both police and workers said that they made the right decision to be cautious. “You never know,” McMahan said. “The world we live in today is a lot different than it was 20 years ago, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.” Police said calls like this are few and far between in Selmer, but it will leave a lasting impression on McMahan and his coworkers. “It’s just not something that you would expect to find, but it’s always in the back of your mind every time you open an envelope,” McMahan said.
