Firework safety spotlighted ahead of holiday celebrations
JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s almost time to light up the sky and bring in the New Year. But before you do, the Jackson Fire Department has some safety reminders to make sure everyone starts their year off right.
“Fire spreads incredibly, incredibly quick, especially outdoors when everything is dry,” said Melissa Nelson, Community Risk Reduction Specialist with Jackson Fire.
Nelson urges residents to supervise all firework activity and to never ignite them near dry grass, structures, or power lines.
“We’re looking at an environment where there’s not a lot of moisture, so things can ignite more easily,” Nelson said.
Backyard fireworks are fun and a way to celebrate as a family, but as you prep for your New Year’s celebration, avoid a risky setup.
Nelson cautions residents to refrain from lighting fireworks in tight spaces or near power lines.
“Sparklers are actually one of the biggest fireworks that cause injuries,” Nelson said. “A lot of people think that they are safe for kids, but the end of those sparklers, they reach incredibly high temperatures.”
As your celebration comes to a close, it’s important to safely dispose used fireworks.
“At the end when you’re picking everything up, instead of throwing everything directly into the trash or putting it in a trash bag, if you could, either douse it in water or put those things in a bucket of water,” said Nelson.
Jackson Fire says taking extra caution and practicing safety is essential to having a good New Year’s celebration.
Nelson says the safest way to bring in the new year is to attend a professional fireworks show.
