RACINE, Wisc. (WISN) – A pregnant woman in Wisconsin is recovering in the hospital after she was attacked with a baseball bat Thursday.

The attack was captured on security video, and now police are searching for the suspects.

Outside a group home in Racine, two hooded figures were caught on camera, one of them carrying a baseball bat.

What happens next can’t be seen in the video, but the brutality can be heard. Gheonna Lacy can be heard screaming for help.

“It replays in my head every time I close my eyes,” Lacy said over FaceTime from the hospital. She was too emotional to speak on camera.

But she said she is a caretaker at the group home.

She was leaving work just before 7 a.m. Thursday when, she said, the two hooded figures — a man and a woman — attacked her.

“They just immediately knocked me to the ground,” Lacy said. “Swinging the bat, stomping me with their feet.”

Lacy said she was trying to protect her stomach; Lacy is a mother of two and is pregnant with her third child.

“She was stating to kill the baby. To get the baby,” Lacy said referring to one of her attackers. “As a pregnant person, you feel like you’re safe, like no one is going to touch you.”

Lacy said she recognized the woman as someone who had been stalking her over a relationship dispute, but she didn’t recognize the man.

After some time, the pair ran off.

Lacy crawled to safety and called 911.

“I never thought something like that would actually happen to her, especially because she’s pregnant. She’s a good mother. She’s always at work. She’s always at home,” Lacy’s best friend Jenna Hunter said.

Hunter lives in Texas and found out about the attack over the phone.

She said her friend has a long road to recovery, but the baby is OK.

“As soon as you know you’re pregnant, your whole world changes. Your child is your everything,” Hunter said.

Lacy’s loved one said she’s understandably very scared to come back to work at the group home.

Racine police said their violent crimes unit is handling the case. As of Friday night, they had not made any arrests.
