If you must drive in wintry conditions, here are some tips to keep you safe
JACKSON, Tenn. — With potential winter weather approaching this upcoming weekend, driving can become difficult and dangerous.

West Tennessee is expecting a potential winter storm this weekend and we have some tips for you if you plan on driving.
Wednesday we sat down with Henderson County Sheriff Brian Duke to discuss these tips.
Sheriff Duke says if you have to drive on the roads it is best to pump your brakes instead of slamming on them and if you slide it is best to steer in the direction you are sliding in.
“If your vehicle slides to the right, steer to the right. With this technique what you are trying to do is correct that movement and bring the vehicle back straight. Most modern vehicles have the anti-lock braking system so this system does most of the work for you, but if you drive an older vehicle that doesn’t have the anti-lock brake system then you pump your brakes instead of slamming on your brakes,” said Sheriff Duke.

He tells us what pumping your brakes looks like.
“Pumping instead of just panicking and slamming on your brakes means you’re intermittently pressing that pedal and it’s slowing you down and it’s not locking those wheels,” said Sheriff Duke.
It is also recommended to prepare early and bring essentials with you if you have to travel at a long distance.
“Make sure you have a blanket, flashlight, water, and food just in case. Always prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” said Sheriff Duke.
It is common to have anxiety with winter weather driving, however Sheriff Duke says it is best to remain calm.
“The main thing to do is not to panic, watch for the other drivers, and drive slow enough for the conditions that you are in,” said Sheriff Duke.
Overall it is recommended to stay home during the dangerous conditions if you can and to check the weather forecast often.
