Tyler Spann Water Safety Project donates CPR kit to Lexington Middle School

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — After the tragic drowning of former Lexington Middle School student Tyler Spann, his parents have dedicated themselves to educating communities about water safety and the importance of lifesaving skills.

Thursday, the American Heart Association presented a CPR in Schools kit to LMS through a donation from the Tyler Spann Water Safety Project.

“I want Tyler’s name to be associated with saving lives. I couldn’t imagine God allowing something so terrible to happen and something good not come from it,” said Angela Spann, Tyler’s mother and co-founder of the Tyler Spann Water Safety Project.

The CPR kit helps ensure students and staff are equipped to respond quickly during a cardiac or drowning-related emergency. Students will learn CPR skills and AED awareness.

“When it comes time for P.E. classes, they will be watching a video and doing hands-on only CPR training,” said Kimmy Spann, Tyler’s mother and co-founder of the Tyler Spann Water Safety Project.

What makes this program special is that it will be led by Tyler’s brother. Through the Tyler Spann Water Safety Project, leaders raise awareness on drowning prevention and promote CPR education.

“It’s very important that the students will start CPR training at an early age. Lot of students may be with their students, or may be with their grandparents and during that time, it’s very, very important that they have that training for CPR for emergency situations,” said Shawn Warren, a board member of the Tyler Spann Water Safety Project.

“I hope that the students will gain a life lesson that they will be able to carry with them from here on out in order to be able to save someone that may be in trouble,” Kimmy Spann said.

After successfully completing the training, students should be able to recognize when someone needs CPR, demonstrate hands-only CPR, demonstrate using an AED, and more.
