Wienermobile chauffeurs students to prom
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) – A group of high school students in Kansas rode in style to their prom, arriving in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.
Cooper Lietz, a student at Seaman High School, said the idea started when he and some friends spotted the iconic vehicle in a grocery store parking lot.
“People take limos,” Lietz said. “This is basically just a big hot dog limo.”
He told his friend, Breckan Andrews, that it would be cool to take the Wienermobile to prom. Andrews decided then to ask the crew members if they could.
“I’m just used to asking weird questions like that, to be honest. I like talking to everyone and it just made sense in my mind. You miss all the shots you don’t take,” Andrews said.
“I thought it was crazy. I thought it was a shot in the dark,” Nick Hill, another one of their friends, said.
To everyone’s surprise, they got a call a few hours later from the crew, saying they would do it.
“They said they’ve been waiting for someone to ask to take them to prom in the Wienermobile,” Hill said.
Before fully committing, Hill made sure to run the idea past his date, Kaitlynn Frye.
“I called her and was like, ‘If I have this once in a lifetime opportunity to ride a really cool vehicle to prom, would you let me go?’” Nick recalled.
Frye said she was having wild guesses like riding on horses, but when she was clued in, she didn’t have a beef with it. She said not many people get to ride a hot dog to prom.
“This is better than a limo,” Frye said.
On Saturday, the group boarded the Wienermobile, surprising other friends with their special ride, and headed downtown.
Cooper said he will remember it for the rest of his life.
“I’ll be able to tell my kids that I rode the Wienermobile to prom,” Hill said.
The Wienermobile did a series of promotional appearances last week around Topeka.
