James “Jimmy” Johnson, age 74 of Puryear, passed away Monday, April 27, 2026, at his residence. His funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Friday, May 1, 2026, at McEvoy Funeral Home with Brett Miles and Steve Gallimore officiating. Visitation will be at McEvoy Funeral Home on Thursday, April 30th, from 4:00-7:00 PM and after 11:00 AM on Friday, May 1st, before the service. Burial will be at a later date in Puryear City Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Wilson, Danny Davis, Larry Chrisman, Dwain Alexander, Mac Gore, and Kenny Gallimore.

James Johnson was born on April 17, 1952, in St. Louis, MO, to the late David Lee Johnson and the late Iva “Pat” Taylor Rose. He was also preceded in death by “Momma”, Nellie Paschall Johnson, his grandmother, whom he attended services with at Puryear Church of Christ.

Jimmy was a man of many trades and talents. He specifically loved his work as a carpenter and a mechanic. He had a deep passion for Harley Davidson and the St. Louis Cardinals, which he deeply instilled in his daughter and grandson. He was a lover of music, especially the Beatles, and was a master of his own “Name that Tune” car trivia. He greatly enjoyed attending NASCAR races, hunting and fishing with his buddies, watching Wheel of Fortune with Gloria, and his morning breakfast gatherings at Blue and White in Hazel.

Jimmy is survived by his daughters: Katrina (Mark) Singleton of Lexington, TN and Melissa Compton of Puryear, TN; his special friend, Gloria Thomas of Murray, KY; sisters: Diana Dunlap of Puryear, TN, and Sara (Clint) Mayo of Leesville, LA; grandchild, Gabriel (Coriana) Singleton; and he is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Memorials for Mr. Johnson may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
