Educator of the Week: Anna English

It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.

Anna English, a fourth grade teacher at University School of Jackson, has been named educator of the week.

English said she wanted to become a teacher to make a lasting impact on students.

“I always said, if you think back to most three influential people in your life, a majority of people are going to have a teacher on that list. And I wanted to be one of those people on some child’s list somewhere in the world, that I get to be a part of their education journey,” English said.

English has been teaching for over 10 years. She said her favorite part of teaching is getting students involved.

“My favorite thing in teaching is getting the kids involved, whether it is moving, whether it’s exercising, whether it’s drawing. Kids are not meant to sit down for eight hours a day. So in my class, we do lots of hands-on. If they’re having fun, they’re learning, and they’re not realizing it, and I’m having fun teaching them,” English said.

English said she makes accommodations for students who are struggling.

“If I see kids struggling, I like to pull them aside and make accommodations where it’s needed. Whether it be less problems. If I see that they are starting to shut down, I usually will pull them aside. And we talk through what is the issue that we’re dealing with right then. Because everyone has their days where they might not be on. And I want to recognize where they are and be able to come alongside and give them the encouragement that they need,” English said.

English said she is grateful for the recognition.

“I’m very excited, very overwhelmed. It’s a privilege to come to work here everyday. And I truly love my job,” English said.

English is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month Award. To vote for her or any other nominees, go to the Tennessee Education Lottery website.
